MLI GroupMLI International Schools are delighted to bring you up to date on their High School Programme, which gives international students the opportunity to study at an Irish High School.

Our programme is open to students aged 12 to 18 and is available at a number of High Schools in Dublin, the surrounding area and throughout Ireland. Students have the option of studying for a full academic year (Sep-June), 2 terms (Sep-Mar/Apr or Jan-June) or 1 term only (Sep-Dec, Jan-Mar/Apr or Mar/Apr-June).

The MLI team has a wealth of expertise and experience in placing students in Irish schools; we offer the best advice, training and support, from the pre-application stage to the end of the student's stay. Students with MLI have the choice of the top fee-paying boarding schools. These can be boarding or day schools with host family accommodation. We also offer state schools with host family accommodation. All MLI High Schools have been chosen for their quality, reputation and high standards.

As part of the academic year MLI provides the student with a guardianship service to ensure that the student has a successful stay - both personally and academically. The MLI Guardianship Team will work with the student from the first contact by helping them to choose the school that best suits them. This continues throughout the year with regular meetings with the student, the school and host family and through providing progress reports for the student's parents, guardians or agents, as appropriate. The Guardianship Team will also assist the student in acquiring all necessary school equipment and materials for the academic year. The Team will remain available to the student at all times during their stay through our 24 hour emergency phone service.

Irish Education SystemSchool Students

Ireland is the ideal location for student's to undertake a High School Programme with its long and distinguished tradition in education, which continues to present day. In recent years, Ireland has become renowned as a location where students receive a quality education with approximately 90% of secondary school graduates continuing on to 3rd Level education in Colleges and Universities throughout Ireland and Europe.

The academic year in Ireland runs from September to June with 3 terms. The first term runs from September to December with the second starting in the new year in January and running to Easter. The final term runs from after the Easter break through to June, when students usually sit internal exams or external state exams (3rd and 6th Year only).

The secondary school cycle in Ireland consists of 6 years of study, which is divided into two cycles: Junior and Senior.

Junior Cycle

The Junior Cycle includes 1st, 2nd and 3rd year and leads to the Junior Certificate Examination (external state exam). Students start the 1st year of secondary school at the age of 12 having completed 2 years at infant school and 6 years of primary school.
 2nd Year (Aged 13-14)

 3rd Year (Aged 14-15)

Senior Cycle

 4th Year (Aged 15-16)

Transition Year

Transition year forms a break between the Junior Cycle and the Senior Cycle. The course varies from school to school but is usually less academic then other school years and is an excellent year for international students to start their studies.
 5th Year (Aged 16-17)
5th and 6th year form the senior cycle. At the end of the two years, students take the Leaving Certificate Examination, which is the examination necessary for high school graduation and university entrance in Ireland. The Leaving Certificate is also recognised and highly regarded by academic institutions in the UK, Europe and the United States.

 6th Year (Aged 17-18)

Curriculum in Ireland

hockey girlIrish Schools follow a curriculum set down by the Irish Department of Education (www.education.ie), and all students follow the same courses and take the same state examinations regardless of the type of schools they attend. At Junior Certificate level students usually take a minimum of 7 academic subjects and at Leaving Certificate level a minimum of 6.

Subjects range from Obligatory Subjects such as Mathematics, English and Irish (Overseas students are not required to study Irish) to the Elective Subjects students can choose from ranging from scientific subjects to business subjects to modern languages to humanities.

Access to third level education is highly competitive in Ireland. Students compete for entry based on their results in the Leaving Certificate Examination. Students are graded on their six best subject scores. Entry requirements for courses may vary from year to year, depending on the number of places available and the number of applicants.

Applications for most full-time undergraduate courses are made through the Central Applications Office (CAO - www.cao.ie).

Conditions:

  • The six best results, in recognised subjects, in one Leaving Certificate Examination will be counted for points computation.
  • One sitting only of the Leaving Certificate Examination will be counted for points purposes.
